Abstract: The ability of retardates to handle the responsibilities of marriage and parenthood has been seriously questioned, but few studies have explored the realities of this problem. This report investigates the marital status of 80 previously institutionalized retardates, discusses possible effects of institutionalization, and suggests how rehabilitation programs can improve the chances of future marital success.
