The Parenting Research Centre is an independent research and development organisation governed by a Board of Management that includes representatives from the Division of Psychology in the School of Health Sciences at RMIT University, the Centre for Community Child Health at the Royal Children's Hospital, the Psychology Department at the Royal Children's Hospital, and Tweddle Child and Family Health Service.

The mission of the PRC is the pursuit of new knowledge of parenting that enhances the wellbeing and resilience of children and families.

The Objectives of the PRC are to:

  • Increase knowledge of parenting and parent focussed psychosocial intervention through basic and applied scientific research.
  • Optimise the health, development and safety of children by empowering their primary carers with parenting knowledge, ideas and skills.
  • Promote the use of evidence-based parenting intervention programs and practices by family, health, education and welfare professionals.
  • Develop strategic working partnerships with government and non-government organisations and vigorously advocate for the development and implementation of effective parenting education and support policy.
  • Maintain a high profile organisation of the highest integrity that is strong, effective, efficient, flexible and innovative.

The PRC engages in a range of activities including research and evaluation relating to parenting and family intervention, developing programs and resources, trialling and evaluating programs for families, delivering professional training programs, and providing expert advice and consultation to government and non-government agencies on issues related to parenting education and support.

Funding for the PRC is provided by the Victorian Government Department of Human Services for core functions including research, development of resources and provision of professional training. Additional project grants and tenders are provided by both State and Federal Governments and the corporate sector.

The PRC has an interest in targeted interventions for high need groups as well as the provision of broader universal support to all parents.
